Kenya Dutch visit gets real about human rights

Amnesty International Kenya asks the government to prioritize human rights when talking with the Netherlands. The Dutch king and queen plan to visit Kenya from March 18 to March 20, 2025, with the aim of strengthening their relationship.

Amnesty director Irungu Houghton believes the visit creates a perfect chance to talk about human rights problems. He points out that Dutch leaders arrived after violent attacks on peaceful protests left many Kenyans dead or hurt. Police used extreme force against protesters during the last nine months, killing more than 60 people. Secret agents grabbed over 80 activists from the streets, with young Kenyans making up most victims. These kidnappings and acts of torture keep happening without anyone facing punishment.

Houghton wants the royal couple and three Dutch ministers to make human rights the main part of talks between Kenya and the Netherlands. Amnesty pushes both countries to explain exactly how human rights will improve in Kenya after their meetings. The group warns against putting business deals and army partnerships ahead of basic human rights.

President William Ruto invited the Dutch royals for their first-ever state visit to Kenya. Their trip shows how well both countries already work together. The Netherlands wants to build new connections and improve current partnerships. Kenya plays a bigger role on the world stage every year. Both countries serve as important business hubs that connect large regions around them. They also team up at the United Nations to support democracy, fair laws, and courts that work without outside pressure.
