Kenya gives village elders a long overdue nod

Kenya plans to recognize village elders with a new policy that makes them official government members. The public can share their thoughts about this Draft National Government Village Administration Policy at former provincial offices next April. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen called it a historic step to restore dignity to these community leaders.

The policy will create clear rules for selecting elders. They must be Kenyan citizens with sound minds. They need good knowledge about their village, culture, and residents. Candidates must have lived in their villages for at least five years before recognition. Officials want these leaders to keep incident registers, help settle disputes, and share information with higher authorities.

Village elders will work directly with assistant chiefs to connect communities with the national government. They will handle local problems, promote peace, and assist with village development projects. The Interior Ministry recently suggested paying these elders a monthly allowance of about 7,000 shillings, depending on economic conditions.

Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo praised village elders as the fabric holding society together. The new system includes training, support, and oversight for these community representatives. Officials believe proper compensation will strengthen grassroots governance throughout Kenya.
