Kenya pushes for unity on Sudan at London talks

Kenya wants stronger action on the Sudan crisis. The country expressed disappointment about the lack of agreement on a joint statement at the London Conference. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi pushed for talks that include all Sudanese groups. Kenya believes equal pressure must target both sides of the conflict to make them negotiate. The nation offered to create safe spaces for discussions where different viewpoints could find common ground.

Most countries at the meeting described the terrible situation in Sudan. They agreed that fighting cannot solve the problem. They called for warring parties to stop fighting and protect civilians. They emphasized the urgent need to end the crisis that harms women and children most. The meeting happened as the Sudan war reached its second year, after causing thousands of deaths.

Kenya asked for respect toward African Union institutions, including IGAD, which should handle Horn of Africa issues. The country criticized efforts that undermine African organizations trying to resolve conflicts. Kenya also requested honest talks with those funding the conflict. Mudavadi mentioned how Kenya helped rescue over 2000 people when fighting started in 2023.

The UK, the African Union, France, Germany, and the European Union led the conference together. Representatives from numerous countries and regional organizations attended. The meeting brought together ministers from Canada, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Qatar, South Sudan, Switzerland, Turkey, the UAE, Uganda, and the United States.
