Kenya owed a lot of money to other countries. From July to September 2024, they paid back some of it.
Kenya paid 165.6 billion shillings in total. Most of this money went to China, which received 65.4 billion shillings, or about 40% of what Kenya paid.
Kenya paid China in two ways: 44.5 billion shillings for the main debt and 20.9 billion shillings for interest.

Kenya owed less money to some places but more to others. It owed 37 billion shillings less to certain countries, 64.6 billion shillings less to some banks, and 381 billion shillings more to groups of countries working together. It also owed a bit more to some suppliers.
At the end of September, Kenya owed other countries 5.188 trillion shillings, about half of its total debt.
Over those three months, Kenya paid other countries 88.2 billion shillings. Most of this, 64.5 billion shillings, was for the main debt. The rest, 23.7 billion shillings, was for interest.
