Kirsty Coventry Shakes Up IOC Race with Bold Q A Series

A special sports leader named Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe wants to talk to people on February 24. She will share her ideas about making the Olympic Games better. Kirsty won many medals when she was a swimmer. She earned seven Olympic medals, and two of them were gold.

Kirsty is 41 years old. She hopes to become the first woman and the first person from Africa to lead the Olympic Games. She believes everyone needs to work together to make sports better for everyone. She runs Zimbabwe's sports and arts programs, and she helps plan future Olympic Games for young people.

Six other people want this important job. Some of them were sports champions like Kirsty. One person is a prince, and another person's father used to be in charge. The current leader, Thomas Bach, must leave because he has been the boss for 12 years, the longest time anyone can have this job.

Another person who wants to be the leader is Sebastian Coe. He won two gold medals in running and helped make the London Olympics happen in 2012. He leads a group that makes rules for running and jumping sports. Sebastian is 68 years old. The rules say Olympic leaders should stop working at age 70, but they might change this rule for him.

Only one woman has ever tried to become the Olympic leader before. Her name was Anita DeFrantz. She was from America and used to row boats in the Olympics. People voted for someone else instead of her. The new leader will be chosen next month in Greece. Everyone will meet there from March 18 to March 21, 2025, to pick the next person to lead the Olympics.
