Kwekwe Goes Wild Over AI Grain Silos

Farmers met Monday as President Mnangagwa opened new smart grain silos at Kwekwe depot. The facility holds 56,000 tons with seven modern storage units that received their first wheat yesterday. These high-tech silos help the government store more grain, cut harvest losses, and keep food available during hard times. The country faces recovery challenges after El Niño drought hurt crops across southern Africa.

Officials built these silos to protect grain supplies through better storage buildings. Similar projects appear in Beitbridge, Gwanda, Lupane, Gokwe, Masvingo, and Mutare. Each location stores 8,000 tons of grain toward a national goal of 1.5 million tons capacity, double what exists today. Better storage helps during dry spells, keeps prices steady, and saves crops from going bad after harvest.

Kwekwe grows lots of grain on farms like Pricabe, which grew 11.3 tons per hectare recently. Before these silos opened, local farmers paid up to $600 hauling grain to Chegutu. The new site saves money and makes storage easier. Zimbabwe needs about 2.2 million tons of grain each year to feed people and animals.
