Law Adviser Highlights CrPC Amendment to Curb False Cases and Expedite Justice

Bangladesh changed its criminal laws to prevent false cases against innocent people. Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul announced the amendment during a government meeting today. The new rules will help stop people from making money through fake criminal charges. Police often take years to investigate murder cases that name hundreds of suspects. Many of these cases involve illegal money exchanges.

The amendment adds section 173(a) to the criminal procedure code. Police commissioners and superintendents can order early investigation reports on cases under their control. Magistrates will review these reports and can remove innocent suspects before trials begin. The new system aims to protect people who have no connection to crimes. Courts and police will work together to stop corruption in the legal process.

The government also approved a draft agreement with the United Nations human rights office. UN High Commissioner Volker Turk visited Bangladesh and requested permission to open a local mission. The advisory council agreed to the proposal during their meeting. The UN office will operate for three years after both sides sign the final agreement. Officials will send the completed draft to Turk for his approval.

Dr Nazrul addressed a recent rape case in Cumilla district. The home ministry arrested the main suspect and people who shared photos online. The government plans to prosecute the case quickly. Previous rape cases led to faster legal changes. Officials promise to treat this incident with the same urgency.
