Lesufi accused of removing Solidarity banner ahead of G20 Summit

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi allegedly directed the dismantling of a Solidarity trade union billboard along the M1 highway in Johannesburg, with City official Mgcini Tshwaku reportedly executing the instruction. The advertisement displayed text declaring South Africa as heavily race-regulated and formed part of the organization's initiative to spotlight concerns about racial policies before the G20 Summit scheduled for November 22 and 23, 2025. Solidarity contends the display highlighted economic impacts of transformation laws, claiming such regulations eliminate nearly 192,000 employment opportunities annually while costing the nation approximately 290 billion rand.

Lesufi condemned the campaign creators through social media on Monday, characterizing them as individuals opposing equitable transformation. Solidarity representative Pieter Jordaan announced plans to pursue legal remedies against municipal authorities for what the union considers illegal destruction of property and suppression of expression. The group maintains it secured proper advertising permits through an authorized agency, making the removal a violation of contractual agreements and constitutional protections.
