A mother lost both of her young children when an electrical storm claimed their lives inside their home in Pader district on Saturday evening. Lightning struck the grass-roofed dwelling in Alipan East village around 6 p.m., instantly killing Emily Amaro-rwot, age 3, and Jacob Omara, age 8, who had ducked inside moments earlier to escape the downpour. Dorcus Adokorach, 25, said she was outdoors when the strike occurred. The bolt sparked flames that consumed four sacks of maize, two sacks of beans, household items and 500,000 shillings the divorced mother had saved from farm sales.
Local councillor Charles Komakech called the deaths tragic and noted that similar strikes have killed more than three residents and five livestock since 2021. He warned against seeking cover beneath trees or inside thatched structures during thunderstorms and requested the installation of protective arresters at community buildings and residences. District administrators acknowledged they lack resources to help Adokorach but asked donors and relief groups to provide support. They pressed national agencies to prioritize safety equipment for northern communities facing dangerous weather patterns during rainy periods.
