Portuguese contractor Mota-Engil finished upgrading Uganda's Lira-Kamdini highway with World Bank financial support. The 66-kilometer stretch forms part of a larger 340-kilometer transportation network connecting northern regions. State Minister Musa Ecweru conducted an inspection tour Tuesday, confirming the project's completion. Travel duration between major towns dropped from two hours to 45 minutes.
The upgraded highway eliminates previous transportation challenges such as dust clouds, damaged surfaces, and seasonal flooding. Farmers, traders, students, and medical personnel benefit from improved mobility across Lira, Oyam, and Kamdini districts. Regional commerce flows more efficiently through this corridor linking Uganda to South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo. The route connects landlocked territories to Kenya's Mombasa port facility.
