Louden Chagona has pleaded guilty to trying to kill his wife. The 50-year-old Zimbabwean made his plea at Liverpool Crown Court. His wife, Abigail Chinorwadza, was attacked at their home in Tuebrook, on Snaefell Avenue.
Chagona hit her head eight times, using a saucepan. And while she lay hurt on the floor, he poured scalding water on her. The attack left her with severe head wounds and burns on her arm.
Her state was critical yet stable when she first got to the hospital. She has since left inpatient care. Photos showed the pan bent out of shape and stained with blood. More blood marks were found in the kitchen.
Chagona had first denied the charge, and a trial was set. But his lawyer, John Rowan, asked the court for a fresh arraignment. An interpreter helped Chagona through the brief hearing.
Judge Stuart Driver KC warned of a long jail term, with life in prison also possible. Chagona will stay in custody until his next court hearing, where he is due to receive his sentence via video link.
