MACRA threatens Blantyre couriers with Data Protection Act fines

MACRA's top boss Daud Suleman delivered a stern warning to courier companies and media workers during a Blantyre workshop on Thursday. The Director General told attendees they must get familiar with the country's Data Protection Act before enforcement actions begin. Suleman pushed for cooperation between regulators and industry players rather than jumping straight into punitive measures. He highlighted how courier services serve as a backbone for digital progress across the nation. The official stressed that these businesses cannot operate outside legal boundaries when handling sensitive customer information.

Suleman explained the critical need for companies to separate private data from public information. He warned that third-party processors face severe consequences if they mishandle personal details. The regulator pointed to delivery drivers and parcel handlers as prime examples of workers who must exercise extreme caution with customer data. Violations of the Act carry hefty penalties that could devastate businesses. His message emphasized that data breaches will trigger serious legal repercussions.

Speeds Courier Manager Esmie Kathako praised the educational session for opening her eyes to proper data handling. She admitted learning valuable lessons about protecting customer privacy and maintaining strict confidentiality standards. Kathako vowed to eliminate harmful practices like photographing customers or sharing their personal details without permission. Major courier firms including Sososo Coaches, Swift Capital, Malawi Post Corporation, Speed Courier, and City Express Courier attended the workshop. The Data Protection Act became law on July 3, 2024, establishing comprehensive rules for lawful and transparent data management across all sectors.
