Larry Dogbe from The Herald newspaper praised President John Dramani Mahama for ending a 19-year cleaning contract. The Youth Employment Agency had deals with Zoomlion Ghana Limited that lasted almost two decades. Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni wrote to the president about problems with the arrangement. The president's office sent a letter on June 11 to stop the renewable contract. Dr. Callistus Mahama signed the termination letter as the president's Executive Secretary.
The government will check all money paid to Zoomlion after the contract expired. Officials plan to recover any unauthorized payments from the company. Dogbe spoke about the decision during a Channel One TV morning show on Tuesday. He wants skilled auditors to handle the investigation properly. The newspaper editor believes Zoomlion should cooperate with investigators and provide all needed documents.
Dogbe thinks people should praise Mahama more for making tough decisions. He says the president deserves credit for ending such a long-running contract. The deal gave Zoomlion GHS850 monthly for each worker. Workers received GHS258 directly from the total amount. Zoomlion kept the remaining GHS592 for administrative costs and management fees.
