Microsoft Plans Xbox Handheld for PC Gaming

Windows Central broke a story saying Microsoft plans to make an Xbox handheld with help from a PC gaming company. Several insiders told reporter Jez Corden that if everything goes according to plan, we might see this device hit stores toward the end of 2025. This matches up with earlier leaks from Winter 2024 that hinted Microsoft wanted to create a portable gaming device. Xbox boss Phil Spencer already talked openly about wanting to compete against popular handhelds like Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go.

The report reveals fresh details about the project called "Keenan," which will definitely look like an Xbox product with the official guide button and Xbox style. Since this comes from a partnership deal similar to how Lenovo works with Valve on Steam Deck, it will probably focus more on PC gaming. Corden believes the device will run full Windows with the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass front and center, but players can still install other platforms like Steam.

Based on his sources, Corden expects the handheld will test new Windows 11 features that adapt to different devices. He thinks it will have less bloatware compared to current gaming handhelds from companies like Lenovo and ASUS. Microsoft might use Xbox Game Bar widgets to let players control power settings and fan speed, plus make the system easier to use with controllers. These improvements could help other PC gaming companies down the road.

Spencer talked about his wish list for future Xbox hardware about six weeks ago, possibly hinting at next-gen home consoles since Sony reportedly works on its PlayStation handheld. Corden claims the handheld project has received full approval from CEO Satya Nadella. He says Microsoft plans to make a premium replacement for Xbox Series X, its standalone gaming handheld, and new controller options around 2027. This news should comfort fans worried about Xbox consoles disappearing, especially since Microsoft recently started releasing their exclusive games on competing systems like PlayStation and Switch.
