Ministers cheer as G20 summit glory hides deep SA struggles

South Africa's G20 Leaders' Summit has drawn acclaim from Ministers Ronald Lamola and Enoch Godongwana, who framed the gathering as evidence of Africa's rising influence in international discourse. Lamola characterized the event as a triumph for cooperative governance, noting that recommendations will advance to International Monetary Fund and World Bank sessions in April 2026. The foreign relations chief argued that institutions like the UN Security Council require restructuring to better represent the Global South, particularly given Africa's disproportionate share of conflicts handled by that body.

Godongwana emphasized the summit's focus on reforming global financial architecture, stating that delegates praised the proceedings as highly effective. The finance minister said emerging proposals will move through multilateral channels to benefit developing economies. Lamola highlighted South Africa's successful coordination of working group sessions across multiple provinces, suggesting the diplomatic achievement extends beyond policy discussions to create lasting economic benefits for host regions through initiatives like the Compact with Africa and climate financing frameworks.
