Mnangagwa shifts the blame for the term extension to the collective

The weird part of Zimbabwe’s power puzzle is that Mnangagwa says the big constitutional shift was not his personal play. He framed the move as something that grew out of the broader political machine rather than a single person’s push.

The changes approved through the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Act Number 3 of 2026 stretch elections from five years to seven years, alter how future presidents are chosen through Parliament, and increase Senate seats from 80 to 90, with 10 selected by the president.

Mnangagwa told state journalists in Harare that major decisions should come from the government as a whole, arguing that shared backing gives the system responsibility when critics challenge those choices.

He also said he feels fortunate to lead a country where citizens across society show dedication, discipline, and motivation toward national development.
