Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen criticized the High Court for declaring the police reforms task force unlawful. He argued that the ruling hurts officers facing challenges that the Maraga-led task force aimed to address.
Murkomen expressed concern about police welfare after Justice Lawrence Mugambi ruled that President Ruto violated constitutional provisions when forming the team. During his recent coastal tour, officers shared numerous welfare issues with the CS, making the court decision particularly troubling to him.
Speaking in Mwatate on Saturday, Murkomen called the ruling irresponsible, warning it might delay needed reforms. Since taking office, he has pushed for improvements in police housing, equipment, technology adoption, and human resources. Officers across six counties have reported problems with transportation, housing, transfers, promotions, and pay.
Justice Mugambi determined that the task force's decisions were invalid. The judge stated that the President exceeded his authority by creating a group that duplicated the National Police Service Commission's functions. The 23-member task force submitted its report to Ruto last October with recommendations, including salary increases for officers.
