Museveni Announces Bid for Seventh Term, Pledging to Eradicate Corruption

Uganda's leader Yoweri Museveni announced plans to seek another presidential term Friday. The 80-year-old president collected nomination papers from his National Resistance Movement party headquarters in Kampala. Museveni told supporters he wants to guide the country forward for five more years. This campaign would mark his seventh bid for the presidency since taking power in 1986. Victory would extend his rule to nearly five decades.

Museveni promised to eliminate corruption during his next term if elected. The president said fighting graft remains a top priority for his administration. He outlined goals to transform Uganda into a 500-billion-dollar economy within five years. The ruling party leader believes the nation has made steady progress since he first assumed control. Economic growth and development continue to drive his political agenda.

Opposition candidate Bobi Wine plans to challenge Museveni again in January elections. The president dismissed Wine as someone who serves foreign interests rather than Ugandan citizens. Wine faces frequent arrests but maintains his innocence and promotes peaceful campaigning. Previous elections have featured violence and accusations of vote manipulation. International observers have questioned the fairness of recent electoral processes.

Museveni's son Muhoozi Kainerugaba leads the army and wants to replace his father eventually. This situation raises concerns about creating a family dynasty in Uganda. Opposition figure Kizza Besigye remains imprisoned on treason charges his lawyers call politically motivated. Museveni once criticized African leaders who stayed in power too long. The president appears to have changed his position on term limits over the decades.
