Nam Hooi Wooi Koon, the oldest Nanhai association abroad, celebrates its heritage in Penang

George Town houses the world's oldest Nanhai association outside China at Nam Hooi Wooi Koon. The massive building spans 200 feet between Chulia Street and Kampung Malabar. Chinese immigrants from Nanhai district started the group back in 1828. They waited until 1904 to construct their permanent home. Famous martial artists Wong Fei-Hung and Ip Man came from the same region.

The association once boasted 4,000 members but membership has dropped to just 1,000 people. Only a few hundred members stay active these days. The building looks plain from outside but hides amazing carved details on the roof. Gold leaf covers the front entrance words written in Cantonese. Stone tablets inside list the names of founding members who donated money.

The main hall stretches deep into the back with a towering wooden altar. Ancestral tablets of dead members fill the two-story high shrine. Five red plaques hang from the ceiling honoring smart scholars from China. The back area features stone altars for earth and grain gods. Members perform special rituals during certain festivals.

Secretary Loh Ji Yuan admits the group struggles to attract young people. They changed old rules to welcome children of female members. The association organizes karaoke nights and cultural events to draw younger crowds. They partner with schools to teach kids about their heritage.

Nam Hooi Wooi Koon opens its doors to visitors on July 7 during heritage celebrations. The building joins seven other historic sites welcoming the public. Modern activities like pickle-ball sessions help bridge old traditions with new generations.
