Namibia invests N$50 million in infrastructure upgrades for green hydrogen industry

Namibia spent N$50 million to improve basic services at Aus and Lüderitz towns. The government wants both places ready for new green hydrogen factories. Officials expect these projects to bring many jobs and billions more in future spending. The massive US$10 billion Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project will be built near Lüderitz. Leaders hope local people will benefit from the clean energy boom.

Construction work could create 15,000 temporary jobs. Factory operations may provide 4,000 permanent positions later. Workers will also find opportunities at shops, hotels and shipping companies that serve the hydrogen plants. Elwin Goaseb from Lüderitz Town Council says new businesses will help the town make more money. The projects should attract other companies to invest there.

Government rules require hydrogen companies to hire local contractors when possible. Lüderitz officials make land buyers agree to use nearby workers and suppliers. The town plans to expand its borders by 290,000 hectares to handle more residents. Leaders are upgrading water systems, waste treatment and power lines. They want enough space and services for all the new workers coming.

Mayor Phil Balhao says Lüderitz received N$91 million extra for town improvements. Most money will pay for planning work that takes up to 15 years to finish. Construction of new infrastructure starts next year after designs are complete. Officials will choose consulting companies on August 9, 2025.
