NDC honors Rawlings 78th, seeks debate on national values

Ghana's National Democratic Congress celebrated the late Jerry John Rawlings on Sunday during what would have marked his 78th birthday. The party held a ceremony focused on remembering the former president's core beliefs about honest government and citizen responsibility. Leaders gathered with Rawlings family members and supporters to discuss his lasting impact on Ghana's politics. The event carried a theme about looking inward and making positive changes for the future. Party officials used the occasion to call for stronger national principles across the country.

National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia delivered the main speech and questioned what values Ghana stands for today. He suggested that Parliament should create a national behavior code based on timeless principles that Rawlings supported. Nketia praised the former leader for always speaking against unfairness even when it cost him personally. He urged younger people to adopt what he called positive resistance against wrongdoing. The chairman also highlighted Rawlings' famous habit of arriving on time and his support for checking how public workers lived.

Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings and his sister Amina represented their father's family at the gathering. They thanked party members for continuing to honor their father's goals and beliefs. General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey called Rawlings a person chosen by fate to change Ghana's direction. He encouraged party members to bring back the national awareness that Rawlings once created among citizens. Several former government officials also spoke about the late president's contributions to Ghana's democracy and local government system.
