Sam Nangolo won the job as Swapo's Oshana coordinator after Saturday's vote count at Oshakati. The Ondangwa Urban District coordinator beat Absalom Itamalo by nine votes. During the special regional party meeting, Nangolo pulled 43 votes compared to youth leader Itamalo's 34.
Nangolo takes over from Werner Iita, who left for a seat in parliament. After winning, Nangolo promised he would team up with Itamalo despite their competition. The new coordinator reached out to his former rival right after the results came in.
Itamalo struggled with problems before the election. People questioned him about money issues from seven years ago. These concerns related to how he handled cash for a youth farming project he ran then.
The extraordinary conference brought together Swapo members from across the region to pick their new leader. They gathered specifically to fill the empty coordinator position that opened when Iita moved to national politics.
