Nexon Snatches StarCraft From Blizzard in Shocking Twist

Nexon won a rights dispute against Blizzard, giving them lead development control of the next major StarCraft game. Korean news source MTN reports Blizzard will assist Nexon but not direct the project. Fans might see something different from the traditional real-time strategy format, though this would risk alienating longtime players. The StarCraft series enjoys massive popularity in Korea, where RTS games remain extremely successful.

The agreement also allows Nexon to create a mobile version of Overwatch for Japanese and Korean markets. Mobile gaming dominates Asian markets, making this a valuable opportunity. This represents a significant setback for Blizzard as Nexon gains access to potentially profitable franchises that Blizzard has struggled to maximize. Players will ultimately decide if Nexon improves these properties when the games release.

This continues a pattern of other studios taking Blizzard concepts and improving upon them. Similar situations happened with hero shooters evolving beyond Overwatch and Path of Exile challenging Diablo. Nexon's success with StarCraft could further damage Blizzard's reputation as an industry leader.
