NIA chief rejects SIM data match over privacy

A top official just shot down a proposal to skip the upcoming SIM re-registration, calling the idea a dangerous privacy breach.

Privacy Warning
  • NIA boss Yayra Koku rejected suggestions to just match existing biometric records instead.
  • He argued that skipping user consent would compromise data privacy and the whole exercise’s integrity.
  • Koku stressed his agency’s system is locked down and needs biometric verification for access.
  • He blasted the proposal from some technologists as unsafe and unacceptable.
Registration Details
  • A nationwide SIM re-registration is scheduled to kick off in June.
  • Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George promised that the process would be seamless.
  • People can apparently handle it from home using their smartphones.
