Niger State Urges Residents in Flood-Prone Areas to Relocate

Niger State officials warn people living near rivers to move to higher ground before severe storms arrive. Weather experts predict three days of thunderstorms and heavy rain across northern Nigeria. The government fears another deadly flood disaster like the one that killed over 200 people in Mokwa recently.

About 2,000 communities sit along riverbanks in 15 local areas throughout Niger State. Government spokesman Jonathan Vatsa says residents must take weather warnings seriously and leave dangerous zones temporarily. Officials plan to launch awareness campaigns urging families to abandon ancestral homes during rainy season.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency forecasts early morning thunderstorms for northern states like Kaduna and Adamawa. Heavier rainfall may hit Borno, Zamfara, Bauchi, Kano and other northern regions. The Federal Capital Territory and several other states face similar storm threats.

Traditional rulers and religious leaders must help convince people to follow flood warnings. The state government cannot risk repeating the Mokwa tragedy that destroyed millions of naira worth of property. Residents can return to their homes after dangerous weather passes.

Moving to safer locations could save countless lives and prevent massive property damage. Community leaders play a crucial role in protecting their people from natural disasters.
