Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has started his nationwide empowerment programs again just days after losing his position as chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee. President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga made a government agreement that led to Nyoro's replacement by Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi. Nyoro traveled across Kenya frequently during 2023 but cut back his activities around mid-2024 when he met resistance from within the Kenya Kwanza government. Many had viewed him as a likely running mate for President Ruto in the upcoming 2027 presidential race.
Nyoro spent Wednesday and Thursday in his home area of Kiharu, launching projects paid for by the National Government Constituency Development Fund. Government officials stayed away from his events near Murang'a town, but local people came out strongly to support him and encouraged him to run for president. The next day, Nyoro traveled to Wundanyi Constituency where he served as the main guest at the launch of an education program started by local MP Danson Mwashako. This Simawukiwa project works just like the education plan Nyoro created in Kiharu, where day students pay only 1,000 shillings each term.
MP Mwashako explained at the event that parents pay 3,000 shillings yearly for school fees, and they cover the rest from CDF money and friends' contributions. Nyoro has become known for fighting to make education available to poor students and promoting cheaper ways to fund secondary schooling across the country. He has traveled widely to help various MPs raise money for school fees. These trips across Kenya might be part of building support for his political future, as reports suggest he plans to create his political party before the 2027 election.
The people of Kiharu have shown clear support for Nyoro moving up in politics. During the opening of a multi-purpose hall at Kahatia Secondary School, local MCA Peter Munga said that after serving two terms as MP, Nyoro should aim higher. The parents at the event cheered loudly when Munga asked if Nyoro should run for president, shouting, "Asimame!" meaning, "Let him run!" The first-term MCA also asked Kiharu residents to support him for the parliamentary seat if Nyoro decides to run for president. Every four days during 2023 and part of 2024, Nyoro traveled around the country, making people wonder about his political plans. The Star newspaper found that from January 10, Nyoro made 15 trips in just 60 days. This 39-year-old economist graduated from Kenyatta University and almost became President Ruto's running mate in 2022, but Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was chosen instead.
