Omaruru Ranchers Push Tough Laws to Halt Stock Thieves

Omaruru farmers want stronger laws to stop rural crime after talking with 55 community members. Markus Trede leads the farmers group and sent their ideas to government officials on June 13. Daily reports of cattle theft and illegal hunting worry local residents. Criminals use spears to kill animals and steal farm equipment regularly. The violence and crime happen often across the farming area.

The farmers ask for higher fines of 25,000 dollars minimum for poachers. Repeat criminals should go to jail automatically under the new rules. Courts must take away vehicles and weapons used during crimes. Bail amounts stay low because judges consider how much money suspects have. Many criminals make more profit from stealing than they lose paying court costs.

The group wants police officers to move between different areas more often. Local connections sometimes pressure officers to ignore certain crimes. Witness statements should replace court appearances for small cases. Unemployment and hunger drive many people to commit these crimes. The farmers hope to create fair laws that help everyone.
