Otjozondjupa San Left Starving as Aid Trucks Delay

Otjozondjupa region struggles to deliver drought relief to San communities across Grootfontein and Tsumkwe areas. Officials work with three pickup trucks and one larger vehicle to reach 5,758 households spread throughout seven constituencies. One pickup truck needs repairs and cannot help transport food supplies to remote villages. The region serves thousands of families across vast distances with limited transportation resources. Officials divide their time between delivering relief supplies and transporting students home from school.

Willem Kobes from Goves area says his community has received no drought relief for three months. Families survive on water and whatever scraps they can find around their settlements. Community members travel to neighboring areas begging for food to feed their children. Kobes contacted both Otjiwarongo and Grootfontein councils for help but received no response from either office. Many residents experience hunger daily without government assistance reaching their remote locations.

Regional development planner Petronella Golo disputes claims about missing relief distributions. She states workers delivered supplies on February 18 and April 30 to affected communities. Government changes moved marginalized programs from the gender ministry to the presidential office causing administrative delays. Golo promises relief distribution will restart Monday beginning with Tsumkwe constituency before moving to other areas. Transportation challenges prevent teams from covering all seven constituencies quickly.
