Over 200 charged with treason after Tanzania protests

Tanzanian authorities have charged more than 240 people with treason, a capital offense, following violent post-election protests. The opposition party Chadema has accused the government of a lethal crackdown, alleging that hundreds were killed and that security forces disposed of bodies to conceal the death toll. These events stem from last month’s disputed general election, which President Samia Suluhu Hassan won by a landslide amid opposition claims of a rigged process and a pre-election clampdown on their candidates.

The government has rejected these allegations, with President Hassan attributing the unrest to foreign influence. It imposed a temporary nationwide internet shutdown during the most intense period of demonstrations, hindering independent verification of events. International bodies, including the United Nations and the African Union, have expressed profound concern and called for independent investigations into the violence and casualties.

Chadema officials state that the treason charges are a politically motivated effort to paralyze their leadership. The party continues to demand justice for those killed and a credible inquiry into the electoral process.
