Palm Sunday Lights Up with Hypatius Honors

Orthodox Christians celebrate Palm Sunday, April 13, remembering Jesus entering Jerusalem before Easter begins. The same day honors Saint Hypatius of Gangra, an early Christian martyr. Palm Sunday ranks among Christianity's most important celebrations as one of twelve major feast days that open Holy Week leading to Easter.

All four gospel accounts describe Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a young donkey, fulfilling ancient prophecy from Zechariah. He arrived six days before Passover, aware his mission would culminate there through sacrifice for humanity. Jerusalem residents welcomed him as their promised Messiah, placing clothes along his path with palm branches waving above. They shouted Hosanna to acknowledge his royal lineage from King David.

Orthodox churches mark this occasion with special liturgy services featuring blessed willow branches. These willows replace palm fronds in Russian tradition because they bloom first each spring. The blessing ritual connects modern worshippers to ancient practices through local plants. This celebration begins Holy Week, when Christians remember Christ's suffering, crucifixion, death, and resurrection. The entire observance helps believers prepare spiritually for Easter, which comes on April 20 this year.
