PCI-SIG says its PCIe 8.0 is too fast for gamers

The PCI-SIG organization has completed the first specification draft for PCIe 8.0, marking version 0.3 as available to member companies. This new standard delivers 256 GT/s raw bit rate with bidirectional bandwidth reaching 1.0 TB/s through x16 configurations. The technology represents an eightfold increase over current PCIe 5.0 capabilities used on mainstream motherboards. Advanced computing applications such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing will benefit from this enhanced performance. PCI-SIG targets a 2028 release date for the finalized PCIe 8.0 standard.

The specification continues using Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-level signaling technology from previous generations. Backward compatibility with earlier PCIe versions remains a design priority for the new standard. Enterprise markets will adopt this technology before consumer hardware manufacturers show interest. Current graphics cards cannot fully utilize existing PCIe 5.0 interface capabilities. The organization maintains its tradition of doubling bandwidth capacity every three years.
