Rain-soaked Dhaka chaos halts Bangladesh SAFF U20 after Marma strike

Heavy rainfall disrupted the fifth match of the SAFF Under-20 Women's Championship at Bashundhara Kings Arena on Tuesday afternoon. Officials initiated play between Bangladesh and Bhutan at 3:00 PM BST despite deteriorating weather conditions. The downpour began during pre-match ceremonies and transformed the playing surface into a waterlogged mess. Players encountered significant difficulties maintaining footing on the slippery terrain throughout the opening period. Both teams struggled with basic ball control as the muddy conditions affected passing accuracy and movement.

Bangladesh overcame the challenging circumstances to score early when Umehla Marma delivered a cross from the right flank in the seventh minute. The initial attempts by Sree Moti Trishna Rani and Shanti Mardi failed to connect properly with the ball. Shanti Mardi recovered from her initial miss to successfully place the ball into the net. The Tigresses maintained their single-goal advantage despite multiple opportunities created by both sides. Poor field conditions prevented either team from capitalizing on additional scoring chances before the interval.

Match officials suspended play at 4:00 PM after determining the pitch had become unsuitable for continued competition. The decision came following a thorough inspection of the playing surface after halftime. A 30-minute delay was announced to assess potential improvements in field conditions. The match commissioner indicated that failure to achieve satisfactory playing conditions would result in postponement. Bangladesh held their 1-0 lead when officials made the suspension announcement.
