Rajnath Singh touts India's ammo self-reliance push

India is pushing hard to make its own bullets and missiles instead of buying them. The defense ministry opened a new automated plant in Nagpur for medium caliber ammo, citing past supply shortages as a reason for this self-reliance push. The facility produces rounds used by the army and navy.

Officials also highlighted shipping Guided Pinaka rockets to Armenia from a local facility. They praised private companies for developing domestic gear like multi-mode grenades and Nagastra drones, which were used in a recent military operation. An advanced counter-drone system is also in testing.

The government wants private firms to account for over half of all defense manufacturing. Figures show a dramatic increase in domestic production value and exports over the past several years, with the private sector contributing a significant portion. This blend of public and private industry is called a unique strength.

The push for self-sufficiency is framed as essential for modern warfare complexities. The expansion aims to transition the country from a major arms importer to a leading exporter.
