Hardeep Singh Puri touts India's energy surge amid $4.3T economy push

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated on Tuesday that approximately 67 million citizens visit fuel stations daily as India's energy consumption reaches 5.5 million barrels of oil per day. The minister emphasized that India has become the world's fourth-largest economy with a GDP of $4.3 trillion and achieved 7.8 percent growth in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025-26. Puri announced plans to expand the nation's gas pipeline network from 24,500 kilometers to 33,000 kilometers by 2030.

The government has provided LPG connections to more than 106 million households through the Ujjwala Yojana scheme, while 15.5 million homes receive piped natural gas. India operates around 8,300 compressed natural gas stations and has 114 operational compressed biogas plants. Puri said the energy sector supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047 through diversified crude imports from 40 countries and increased domestic exploration.
