Registration Mayhem as EC Extends Voting Deadline

Uganda Gives People More Time to Sign Up for Voting.

The people who run Uganda's elections said everyone can have seven more days to put their names on the voting list. They made this choice because many people still needed time to sign up, and some of the machines they used were not working well.

Justice Byabakama, who leads the election team, told everyone about the new plan on Monday. He said people can come to sign up from February 11 until February 17, 2025. The sign-up places will stay open from morning until evening, even on weekends. He made it clear there would not be any more extra time after these seven days.

The election team faced some problems during the first sign-up time. They did not have enough machines to help everyone quickly, and sometimes, the machines they had stopped working. Many people had to wait in long lines to sign their names or change where they wanted to vote.

Even with these problems, lots of people came to sign up. More than 361,000 new people added their names to vote, and about 292,000 people asked to vote in different places. The total number of people who can vote has grown to almost 20 million, which is much more than the last time Uganda had big elections.

The election team wants everyone who can vote to check if their name and information are right. People can look at their information at the sign-up places or on the election team's website. They want to make sure everything is correct before the big elections in 2025 and 2026.

In April and May 2025, the election team will show everyone the full list of voters and tell people more about how many can vote at that time. They really want everyone who can vote to use these extra days to sign up if they haven't already.
