A retired German journalist has created an artist group that supports local painters and sculptors. Franz Ferry lives in Sanyang and started Art27 last November after eight years in The Gambia. He pays for art supplies and transportation for eight full-time artists. Ferry calls his home the Blue Castle and recently held an art gathering there. He wanted to help artists beyond just buying their work.
Isatou Bah joined the group this year and works as a sculptor. She started making art in 2019 and focuses on recycling materials for her pieces. Ferry gave her canvas and paint to help her improve her skills. Bah says being part of Art27 has been very helpful for her career. She credits Ferry with pushing her to take art more seriously.
Kebba Nyassi has been making art since childhood but struggled to earn money from it. He says families discourage young people from becoming artists because it does not pay well. Nyassi believes the government should invest more money in cultural programs. He points to Senegal as an example where art contributes significantly to the economy.
Ferry tried working with other art groups but could not find common ground. He remains hopeful about building something new with Art27. Ferry believes artists deserve respect and wants Gambian creators to feel valued. He thinks art represents dignity and identity for people. The collective gives artists a fresh start and stable support.
