Russia makes it harder to lay off staff

Russia might make firing people harder soon. A new bill is currently being considered by lawmakers at the State Duma. The rules would force companies to offer workers other jobs matching their skills before letting them go. If no matching jobs exist, employers must suggest different positions, even lower-paying ones. These changes aim to help employees win court battles against unfair dismissals.

Current laws say companies need to offer jobs "in the given locality," but this phrase lacks clear meaning. This vague wording lets some businesses find loopholes when cutting staff. The proposed update would close these gaps. According to job site hh.ru, about 21% of companies in St. Petersburg plan to reduce their workforce this year.

The bill creators believe these protections will give workers more power during uncertain times. Under the new system, employers would need better reasons to dismiss staff. They would have to prove they tried finding alternative positions for workers. Many Russians worry about job security as economic challenges continue across the country.
