Ruto dishes out Ksh258m to 10k youth entrepreneurs in NYOTA launch

Classic government move: throwing cash at the youth entrepreneurship problem. President William Ruto handed out over two hundred fifty-eight million shillings through the NYOTA program at Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. The funding targets ten thousand three hundred thirty-seven young business starters from Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado counties.

Each person gets twenty-five thousand shillings for launching or growing a small venture. Most of the cash lands in a Pochi la Biashara account, with a smaller portion held in a National Social Security Fund savings account. Ruto told beneficiaries to use digital job platforms for work, emphasizing training and mentorship alongside the money.

The NYOTA initiative is a partnership with the World Bank, boasting a five billion shilling total budget. Recipients must spend grants according to submitted business plans, with ongoing technical support provided. A second phase will deliver another twenty-five thousand shillings to each participant.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki called the program inclusive, helping skilled and unskilled youth alike. Seventy people from every ward in the three counties received funding this round. The project's next phase will expand to sixteen additional counties along the coast and western regions.
