Ruto to rename Kiminini school in tribute to Chebukati

President Ruto wants to fix up a school near Kiminini and name it after Wafula Chebukati, who passed away recently. He thinks this honors the former election boss who ran things honestly. During the funeral at Chebukati's place in Sabatia, the President promised to build many classrooms and add computers for students to learn tech skills.

"We agree with your community leaders about changing the name of the nearby school," Ruto said at the service. "I will help create fifteen new classrooms and a computer center because Chebukati used digital systems to keep our elections fair." The President added that technology made voting more open than ever before, which makes Chebukati worth remembering as someone who truly loved Kenya.

Chebukati finished his job running the election commission on January 17, 2023. Sadly, he died on February 21, 2025, during medical treatment in Nairobi. He lived sixty-three years. Family member Eric Nyongesa told people that doctors found brain cancer in Chebukati's head. His heart stopped beating during hospital care.

Nyongesa explained they learned about the cancer just months after Chebukati left his government job. The family sent him to Germany, where doctors cut out the tumor. "Since the cancer seemed pretty serious, medical experts told us he needed surgery right away," Nyongesa explained. After successful treatment, Chebukati stayed overseas, recovering until summer.

He came back home around July that year according to what Nyongesa shared with everyone. Between recovery time and early 2024, Chebukati traveled to different countries, giving talks about voting systems and computer technology. He stayed active, sharing his knowledge at various international meetings despite his health struggles.
