Sandals Resorts vows no layoffs after Hurricane Melissa

Sandals Resorts allocated over $3 million toward employee assistance following Hurricane Melissa while guaranteeing continued employment and full benefits for all workers regardless of whether their assigned properties remain operational. Executive Chairman Adam Stewart told travel industry representatives that staff would retain salaries, pensions, and healthcare coverage, with each team member receiving financial grants to address immediate household expenses.

Properties in Negril and Ocho Rios will resume operations in early December, while three Montego Bay area resorts will undergo extended renovations through late May. Stewart praised employees at Sandals South Coast for prioritizing reconstruction efforts despite personal losses from the storm.

Jamaica projects full tourism sector restoration by mid-December as the nation recovers from the Category 5 hurricane that Prime Minister Andrew Holness estimates caused between $6 billion and $7 billion in damages and could reduce economic output by 8 to 13 percent.
