Seven Firms Set to Rescue Bulawayo Falls Road

Seven new contractors will join Bitumen World to fix the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road. Each company will handle about 51 kilometers of the 435-kilometer route leading to the major tourist destination. The plan follows the same model used for the Harare-Beitbridge road project. Companies were supposed to begin April 3 but faced delays with paperwork.

Matabeleland North Provincial Minister Richard Moyo said the project goes beyond filling potholes. The government wants to completely rebuild the damaged highway that has increased travel time from five hours to eight or more. Heavy truck traffic and recent rains have left the road in poor condition.

This highway connects Zimbabwe with Southern African nations like Zambia, DRC, and South Africa. It also serves as an important access point for tourists heading to Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls. The project represents part of national efforts to become an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

Since 2021, the government has fixed more than 50,000 kilometers of roads and 2,000 structures under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme. President Mnangagwa has made infrastructure development a priority despite limited access to international funding.
