Skadden snaps up ex-Freshfields rainmaker in Brussels

Skadden just poached a massive legal heavyweight to beef up its European antitrust squad. Rafique Bachour is ditching Freshfields to join Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom as a partner in Brussels. This move brings over two decades of experience handling merger controls and messy international investigations. He specifically focuses on the European Foreign Subsidies Regulation alongside complex litigation strategies.

Jeremy London from Skadden hyped up the arrival because the firm wants to expand its footprint in Brussels. He claims Bachour fits perfectly due to his mix of regulatory skills and business smarts. Ryan Junck also chimed in about needing top talent because regulators everywhere are cracking down hard on foreign investments and mergers.

The guy has a serious resume after spending twenty-six years at his old firm, where he started as a trainee. He worked on huge transactions like the merger between Teck Resources and Anglo American. His track record features the regulatory strategy for UBS buying Credit Suisse and AstraZeneca picking up Alexion Pharmaceuticals.

Bachour mentioned that Skadden offers a great platform for navigating geopolitical headaches. His exit comes after he left a leadership role at Freshfields once Georgia Dawson secured a second term as senior partner. While Bachour walked away, Alan Mason, alongside Rick van Aerssen, kept their spots as co-managing partners.
