Smart Africa unveils blueprint for digital health market

Continental health ministers endorsed the Smart Africa Digital Health Blueprint at a summit in Guinea, establishing standards for patient data portability among 42 member nations and addressing mortality disparities linked to disconnected medical systems. Life expectancy across the region averages 64 years against a worldwide figure of 72, while infant deaths reach 47 per thousand births and annual spending per capita sits at $79 compared with global expenditures exceeding $1,000.

The framework mandates unique patient identifiers, professional registries, and gateway infrastructure enabling semantic exchange of clinical records with citizen consent controls. Implementation oversight falls to the newly formed Smart Africa Digital Health Leadership Network, which will coordinate the Africa Health Data Space as SIM penetration approaches 1.36 billion connections by decade's end.

Director General Lacina Kone characterized validation as transformative for a continent where fragmented information systems contribute to preventable fatalities, positioning the blueprint as foundational architecture for unified digital care delivery through 2030.
