South Sudan Scrambles to Shelter Million Refugees

South Sudan leaders praised their people for taking in more than a million Sudanese refugees. Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel met with Disaster Minister Albino Akol Atak to discuss refugee help plans Tuesday. The ongoing war across the border keeps pushing desperate families into South Sudan. Officials say about 1.12 million people have entered the country seeking safety from violence.

These new arrivals strain local communities that share water, food, land with them. The Vice President thanked South Sudanese citizens for welcoming those running from danger. Both leaders talked about terrible floods that damaged many areas last year. They reviewed plans to handle future disasters better. They also discussed current drought problems hitting parts of Eastern Equatoria where farmers struggle.

The government promises no one will face hardships alone during these tough times. Bol Mel announced President Salva Kiir ordered special help for people caught in conflicts at Nasir and Ulang counties. Both areas sit in Upper Nile State where fighting has hurt many families. Leaders vowed to deliver basic services to all citizens facing problems. The government wants everyone to know they can count on support when they need it most.
