Spanish Town mayor Scott to face court over St Elizabeth polling clash

Assault charges have been filed against Spanish Town Mayor Norman Scott after an altercation at a St Elizabeth polling location during the September 3 general election. Police accuse the 66-year-old People's National Party candidate of striking an election official and damaging property when confronted about exceeding his permitted time at the station. The incident occurred around noon while Scott campaigned for the South East St Elizabeth constituency seat.

Black River Police report that Scott refused to leave when initially approached by an election agent about his time limit. A second official attempted to calm the situation but received a blow to the face from the mayor before security personnel escorted Scott away. Authorities began their investigation after receiving a formal complaint about the confrontation.

Officials served summonses on Scott today for assault causing bodily harm and malicious property destruction. The mayor must appear before St Elizabeth Parish Court on Monday, October 13, to answer the charges stemming from his election day conduct.
