Stack Overflow survey shows developers rely on AI tools, but trust drops to 29 percent

Stack Overflow examined 49,000 professional software engineers to assess artificial intelligence integration within coding practices. Four-fifths of respondents use AI assistance for development tasks. Developer confidence in machine-generated responses declined from 40 percent to 29 percent over twelve months. Accuracy concerns dominate complaints about these automated systems. Engineers report difficulty detecting subtle errors within AI-produced code segments.

Junior programmers demonstrate higher reliance on algorithmic suggestions yet face greater risks from incorrect outputs. Many developers return to traditional community platforms after encountering problems with language model tools. Managers continue promoting AI adoption despite widespread developer reservations about reliability. The technology remains valuable when applied strategically rather than blindly trusted.
