Suluhu Demands Swift Action in DRC Crisis

Tanzania Leader Warns of Congo War Tests.

Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan said Africa must act fast on Congo's war. She spoke at a meeting of East and South African leaders in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

"Past people will say bad things about us if we stand by as things turn worse each day," Hassan said. She wants African answers to African problems.

Leaders came to talk about East Congo. The M23 fighters have taken the town of Goma. They push near Bukavu. Many people ran from their homes. Trade stopped. Pain grew.

Uganda's Museveni, Kenya's Ruto, Zimbabwe's Mnangagwa, Somalia's Mohamud, Zambia's Hichilema, and Rwanda's Kagame joined the talks. Congo's leader, Tshisekedi, watched from a computer screen. He sent his top helper, Judith Suminwa.

"We saw awful fights in past weeks. These hurt people, made them run, and broke trade between lands," Hassan said. She wants the talks to make clear plans that help people.

Hassan promised Tanzania would back peace work. She asked all sides to talk about peace and think of Congo's people first. "Congo's safe future means our area can grow strong," she said.

The World Health Group says help cannot reach North Kivu. Fighting has broken health buildings. Places that work have no drugs. Workers leave or face hard workloads.

"Sick people cannot find care. Drug stores ran dry. Health helpers left or work hard hours," the World Health Group said.

Hassan thinks Congo's peace means more than one land's good. Bad times there hurt all of Africa's dreams to grow better. She asked East and South African friends to work as one. They must stop the guns and build peace.

"We must stay strong in our wish to see quiet, safe areas. Our lands must stand tall next to each other in peace," she said.
