Suzanne Vega Debuts Speakers Corner Song and Video

Suzanne Vega fans have waited eleven years for fresh music from the New York singer-songwriter. Her last full album came out back in 2014. I previously wrote about her song Blood Makes Noise for a column. That track might not rank among her biggest hits, but it stands as an excellent piece of music. Looking through her impressive catalog always brings pleasure to music lovers. This spring marks the arrival of brand-new material from this beloved artist.

Many projects kept Vega occupied during her recording hiatus. Last year, she broke her silence with Rats, a single inspired by rock band Fontaines D.C. Her upcoming album bears the name Flying With Angels. Long-time musical partner Gerry Leonard handled production duties for the record. According to Vega, every song addresses different forms of struggle. She mentions struggling to survive, speak out, win, escape, help others, or just make it through daily life. The themes connect through their exploration of human challenges.

Her latest release, Speakers' Corner, celebrates public spaces where people freely express themselves. Most folks using these platforms might seem unusual or fringe characters. They lack real power and sell nothing to listeners. Vega sings about preserving these spaces before they disappear from society. She believes democracy suffers when people lose places to voice their thoughts. Her press statement emphasizes the importance of truth and accountability when speaking publicly. Lying should never become normalized or accepted.

Fans can watch an animated video for Speakers' Corner created by director Michael Arthur. The album contains ten tracks, including Witch, Chambermaid, Love Thief, and Last Train From Mariupol. Concert-goers have plenty of chances to hear these songs performed live. Vega starts touring March 6 in Rhode Island before heading across North America. European dates begin September 30 in Amsterdam. The extensive schedule wraps up with a November 3 performance at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall.
