Tanzania censors web as Suluhu sworn in under blackout

Tanzania has begun restoring internet service following a five-day blackout, though restrictions on social media applications persist across the nation, according to NetBlocks, a global network monitoring organization. The group confirmed on Monday that platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X and Telegram remain difficult or impossible to reach despite partial reconnection.

Performance measurements reveal these services either fail to load entirely or work with severe limitations across multiple providers. WhatsApp messaging features show minimal functionality while X experiences near-complete disruption affecting uploads, video content and website entry. YouTube and Telegram face similar blockages at both desktop and mobile levels. Login systems, image delivery and streaming capabilities register failure rates throughout testing procedures.

The outage occurred as President Samia Suluhu Hassan secured her second term with 98 percent of votes counted on Saturday. Her inauguration took place on Monday at a military facility in Dodoma, broadcast through state television while the public remained barred from attending. Opposition groups have challenged the electoral outcome and called for international oversight of future voting. NetBlocks indicated the disruption hampers election transparency and information access nationwide.
