Tanzania to launch peace talks after post-election unrest

Tanzania will launch consultations nationwide to address divisions following contested elections in October that saw President Samia Suluhu Hassan secure nearly 98 percent of votes, Deputy President Emmanuel Nchimbi announced. Opposition groups, which were prevented from participating, rejected the outcome as illegitimate while the African Union determined the process failed to satisfy democratic benchmarks. Violent demonstrations afterward resulted in hundreds of deaths according to multiple accounts, though authorities disputed casualty figures and maintained the voting proceeded fairly.

More than 240 individuals face treason charges linked to the unrest, with potential death sentences if convicted. Nchimbi said the forthcoming dialogue reflects Hassan's commitment to inclusive governance and creating opportunities for citizen participation. Kenya's Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi discussed protections for Kenyan residents in Tanzania during meetings with his counterpart. Officials expect to release details about the dialogue structure within weeks.
